Pieces
- King — one square any direction; castling special move.
- Queen — any number of squares vertically, horizontally, or diagonally.
- Rook — ranks and files.
- Bishop — diagonals.
- Knight — L-shape; jumps over pieces.
- Pawn — forward one (two from start); captures diagonally.
Special moves
- Castling — king moves two toward a rook; path clear; not out of/through/into check.
- En passant — capture a pawn that just advanced two squares.
- Promotion — pawn on last rank becomes queen/rook/bishop/knight.
Ending
- Checkmate — king attacked with no legal escape → attacker wins.
- Stalemate — no legal moves, king not in check → draw.
